As night falls, indoor lighting casts a warm glow from within, while just beyond a front door lies a snowman that hints at the presence of children. • Aside from Rudolph, can you name Santa's eightoriginal reindeer? They were first introduced in the 1823 poem A Visit From St. Nicholas (more commonly known as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas), credited to Clement Clarke Moore. They are: Dasher, Dancer,Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen.
• Rudolph was introduced in a children's book published in 1939, but became one of Santa's most famous reindeer after the release of the 1949 Christmas song—now a beloved holiday standard!
• "Donner" and "Blitzen" areof German origin, meaning "thunder" and "lightning" (respectively)—but that's not quite how these two reindeer were originally known. When the poem was originally published in 1823, their names were "Dunder" and "Blixem"—two Dutch words meaning "thunder" and "lightning." This was changed to "Donder and Blitzen" in 1844, and finally "Donner andBlitzen" in the 1949 song that made Rudolph famous.
