The finish is the surface treatment that gives a coin its character. Two pieces can share the same design and metal and still look completely different depending on how they were struck and treated.

Proof

A proof finish uses polished dies and specially prepared blanks to create mirror like backgrounds and crisp, frosted design elements. The contrast between the shiny field and the frosted devices is prized by collectors. When that contrast is especially strong, it is called Cameo or Ultra Cameo.

Mint State

Mint state is a standard production strike with full original detail and no wear. Premium mint state examples can still be highly collectible, especially at the top grades.

Antiqued

An antiqued finish is given a deliberate aged patina, so the piece looks like a treasured artifact rather than a bright new coin. It brings out fine detail in high relief designs and suits historical and fantasy themes beautifully.

Colorized

Colorized pieces have color applied to part of the design, often to bring a character or scene to life. The color is applied with precision and sealed as part of the finished piece.

High Relief

High relief means the design rises dramatically above the surface of the coin, giving it real depth and sculpture. It takes extra striking pressure to achieve and produces a striking, three dimensional result.

Gilded

A gilded piece has a layer of gold applied to part or all of the design, adding warmth and contrast, often over a silver coin.
