PURGATORIO 700TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DIVINE COMEDY – 2021 5000 FRANCS CFA 5 OZ PURE SILVER HIGH RELIEF COIN – CAMEROON NGC 70
ONLY 17 EXIST WORLDWIDE IN THAT GRADE AND LABEL
Taking a step back in time, this coin represents one of the most well-known literary works of the 14th-century — the epic poem, Divine Comedy created by the renowned Italian writer Dante Alighieri. The poem tells the story of Dante’s journey through three Divine Realms: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. As an allegory, the Divine Comedy represents the journey of the soul toward God.
Presenting Dante’s journey in a language of coinage art, the coin dazzles with its smallest details crafted masterfully. Beautiful reliefs of this numismatic item depict the climb of Dante up the Mount of Purgatory, accompanied by the Roman poet Virgil. They discuss the nature of sin, examples of vice and virtue, as well as moral issues.
The unique author’s reproduction artistically tells the main plot of the poem. After passing through the gate of Purgatory proper, Virgil guides the pilgrim Dante through the seven terraces. These correspond to the seven deadly sins: Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Avarice, Gluttony, and Lust. The terraces are masterfully depicted in a high relief technique using hand polishing.
