Why is almost everything struck in silver? Silver takes fine detail well, holds colour and antiquing beautifully, and keeps a licensed issue at a price collectors will pay for something they want to own rather than store. Gold issues exist but are typically fractional and made in far smaller numbers.

Weights run from one ounce, the workhorse of the licensed market, up to five ounce and kilo pieces where the extra surface lets a mint attempt high relief and elaborate colour work.

Silver content alone does not set the price of a collectible. Mintage and grade usually matter more, which our guide to population reports explains through the two numbers that describe real scarcity.

Current inventory includes 557 silver pieces.
