The Story

Mistress of the Sea 2024 Niue 2 oz Silver Antiqued Gilded Coin

She commanded 400 junks and up to 60,000 pirates. She retired, and she was never caught.

The Mistress of the Sea 2024 2oz Silver Coin from the Lithuanian Mint is dedicated to Zheng Yi Sao, the most successful pirate in recorded history. Struck in 62.2 g of Ag999 at 45 mm in high relief, with an antique finish, digital printing and selective gilding, in a worldwide mintage of just 500 pieces.

The Scene

Zheng Yi Sao stands braced in the rigging of her own ship, cutlass drawn, coat flaring. The sculpt puts her at the centre in deep relief while the deck falls away behind: a crewman hauling line at her feet, barrels lashed amidships, and the silhouettes of the junks of her fleet standing off in the haze. Her name for herself is struck on the banner above.

Colour is used with restraint. The crimson coat and tricorn carry printed brocade detail, and selective gilding picks out the pauldrons, bracers and sash. Everything else is left in antiqued silver, so the relief carries the drama rather than the paint.

Who She Was

Zheng Yi Sao took command of the Guangdong Pirate Confederation in 1807 after her husband's death, and ran it better than he had. At its height her fleet numbered around 400 junks and somewhere between 40,000 and 60,000 pirates, a force that outmatched the navies sent against it and extracted tribute from the Qing dynasty, the Portuguese and the British alike.

She enforced a written code, including severe penalties for mistreating women captives, and she is one of the very few pirate commanders in history to negotiate a general amnesty and simply walk away. She died in her seventies, at home.

The Obverse

A compass rose fills the field, with the four cardinal directions marked in Chinese characters, framing the Public Seal of Niue beneath a royal crown. Inscribed 5 DOLLARS, Ag999, 2024 and the Niue motto ATUA NIUE TUKULAGI, with the Lithuanian Mint monogram.
