The 2016 reverse design features a Kookaburra perched upon a fence post that is wrapped in barbed wire; the bird is shown with its head tilted up and its mouth slightly agape, in its familiar “laughing” position. “AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA” and ” 2016 1 KILO 999 SILVER” are inscribed around the scenic image.
Kookaburras are known for their distinct call that is often compared to loud, echoing human laughter. The birds, the largest of the kingfisher species, are carnivorous, with a diet consisting of snakes, small reptiles, mice, fish, insects, and sometimes even baby birds. They typically grow between 11 and 17 inches in length.
The obverse portrays the longest reigning British Monarch in history, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Ian Rank-Broadley created the right-facing image of the Queen, which is surrounded by inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” “2016” and “30 DOLLARS.”
