The Story

Before satellites, before instruments of any precision, sailors navigated by the wind. This 2026 Niue five dollar coin puts that older system back at the centre of the design: a gilded compass rose on a deep blue field, ringed by the eight Mediterranean wind names that Renaissance cartographers used as their bearings. Tramontana to the north, Greco, Levante, Sirocco, Ostro, Libeccio, Ponente and Maestro around to the northwest.

Two ounces of .999 fine silver, struck by the Mint of Poland with an antique finish that lets the engraving read as recovered rather than newly minted. The compass star and the surrounding ring are selectively gilded, and the ocean field behind them is a deep blue resin fill rather than applied colour, which gives it real depth under the light. The border carries engraved scrollwork drawn from historical chart decoration, and four wind faces blow inward from the corners of the field.

The obverse carries the Charles III effigy alongside the Niue issuing details and the Ag 999 fineness mark.

The presentation is part of the piece. It arrives in a turned wooden case with a working magnetic compass set into the lid, so the box itself does what the coin depicts.

Mintage is 500 worldwide. Forty five millimetres, two troy ounces, supplied with its certificate of authenticity.
